Weighbridge Maintenance in Thunderstorm Season

The thunderstorm season comes again. Many customers’ weighbridges suffer lightning strikes, resulting in damaged sensors and indicators, data loss, and even severe damage to the entire weighing system. As a professional weighbridge manufacturer, we hereby remind all customers to strengthen lightning and moisture protection.

 Pre-storm Inspection

A comprehensive professional inspection is mandatory, including grounding resistance testing, SPD status check and sensor zero drift calibration. Key requirements are as follows:

(1)The junction box is the core component. Cut off the power supply first, spray a moisture-proof agent, wrap the interfaces with waterproof tape for three layers, and fasten the sealing cover tightly to prevent rainwater infiltration.

(2)Check the grounding system strictly. The grounding resistance must be less than 4 ohms. Use a voltage tester to confirm no electric leakage, and ensure the grounding wire is intact without breakage to avoid electric conduction during thunderstorms.

(3)Do not ignore sensors and cables. Wipe off surface water stains, check for damaged protective sleeves, route cables away from waterlogged areas, and seal all connectors with waterproof boxes.

(4)Unplug the power and sensor plugs when the equipment is idle. Shut down the system in severe thunderstorms, cut off power to all devices and disconnect weighing data cables.

 Self-inspection & Repair After Thunderstorms

Visual inspection is recommended after every thunderstorm. Check whether the SPD indicator window changes color (indicating failure) and confirm the grounding wire is free of looseness and corrosion.

If the weighbridge malfunctions suddenly with fluctuating data, black screen or startup failure during thunderstorms, please identify the fault cause first. Common faults are categorized into three types:

(1)Fluctuating data: Caused by water entering the junction box. Cut off power immediately, wipe off accumulated water, apply moisture-proof agent, complete tight sealing, and restart the device for recovery.

(2)Black screen / error code: Caused by poor grounding. No response from the voltage tester means poor contact. Fasten the terminals tightly and ensure the grounding resistance is below 4Ω.

(3)Failure to weigh normally: Caused by damaged cables. Wrap the damaged section with waterproof tape, reroute cables far from ponding areas for temporary use, and replace the protective sleeve in time.
